Alanda Coffee Table

Great design seamlessly captures and transcends the spirit of its time. Paola Piva’s iconic Alanda coffee table is a classic example of this rare feat, sought out for its iconic shape and chameleon-like versatility. Piva’s design, in which a single sheath of glass sits on top of a geometric black framework of hollow inverted pyramids, is a simple yet striking reflection of its era and an audacious expression of modern elegance. And although the table encapsulates the conspicuous architectural language of the 1980s, it has since become a stalwart of the interior design world, favoured by the world’s leading contemporary designers. To mark Piva’s passing earlier this year, the table has recently been re-released to pay homage to the great architect and designer.

Pochette Armchair

Pochette is a generously shaped armchair that is as unusual as it is inviting. Designed by Piero Lissoni, it takes its name from a small, high-quality object, a soft and graceful bag, to be touched and held close to the body on the most important occasions. Such a fusion of care and lightness is found in the equilibrium of Pochette, where steel and leather combine to give form and substance to a seat that offers relaxation without neglecting style. A painted steel tube, left exposed in the back, defines the shape and creates support, amid straight lines and sinuous curves that wrap around the upholstery. The tubular frame features leather upholstery made with a technique inspired by that used for luxury car steering wheels. It is a slow and careful technique, capable of hiding the seams and revealing sophisticated piping that serves as a refined decorative pattern. Expertise in leather workmanship is found in every detail of Pochette, including the two back cushions, elements that have no fixed position but, like a handkerchief placed with studied nonchalance in a jacket pocket, can be arranged as desired to accommodate your preferred posture. While the tubular frame is upholstered in leather, the cushions can be in leather or fabric, with the aim of creating an understated ensemble in each case. A synthesis of class and savoir-faire, Pochette is presented as a versatile armchair that is ideal for reading, but also for conversation, in the living room or sleeping area, for private spaces and public settings.

Pavilion AV4 Armchair

2,400

Located on the castle grounds of Copenhagen’s Kastellet overlooking the waterfront promenade that is home to the Little Mermaid, The Langelinie Pavilion stands with a resilient spirit. The first Pavilion was built in 1885. The second was built in 1902 for the Royal Danish Yacht Club but was sadly destroyed during World War II. The current Pavilion was built 1958 by architect couple Eva and Niels Koppel in homage to modernism. Echoing its own ability to endure is the Pavilion chair by Andersen & Voll. Here the challenge was to design a stackable chair used for mass seating in this iconic, multi-purpose venue, the Langelinie Pavilion. Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll wanted to link early modernism with new modernism. “Often tube chairs are constructed at fixed angles,” notes Anderssen. “We wanted a freer form of expression and explored the idea of bent tubing teamed with bent plywood.” “The Pavilion chair has an airy feeling, with slim arms and legs that give it a light appearance,” explains Voll. “A softer aesthetic in a curvaceous silhouette that’s barely there.” The effect is lyrical, graceful and poetic. Almost like a tied rope that has come undone.

The individual element is reminiscent of a terrace-like, stepped slope with different widths and depths. As in the case of the interiors of the Pop Art generation, all it takes is a single building block each on the “left” and “right” to create an inviting 2-seater sofa, a seating pyramid or a little mountain range of sofas.
